Ingredients 101
A plain-language guide to the superfoods, botanicals and adaptogens we love — what they are and why they matter.
New to the world of superfoods and botanicals? Start here. This is our growing, plain-language glossary of the ingredients we write about most — no jargon, no hype, just what each one is and why it's worth knowing.
Superfoods
Acai — a deep-purple Amazonian berry, rich in the antioxidant pigments (anthocyanins) that colour blueberries. Earthy, barely sweet, and the star of a good smoothie bowl.
Moringa — a fast-growing tree leaf with an unusually complete nutrient profile: vitamins, minerals and a full set of amino acids. Intensely green in flavour, best paired with fat and acid.
Botanicals & adaptogens
Adaptogens — a group of herbs (ashwagandha, reishi, tulsi, rhodiola) traditionally used to help the body cope with stress. Best treated as a gentle ritual, not a magic bullet.
Turmeric — the golden root behind those warming golden lattes. Pair it with black pepper, which helps your body absorb its active compound, curcumin.
