Fresh ginger steeped hot releases its gingerols, lemon adds vitamin C, and a spoon of honey soothes — a simple hot drink that does real work at the first sign of a cold, or any time you need warming from the inside.

Tip: Let it steep the full ten minutes and keep the mug covered — gingerols and the aromatic oils are volatile, and a lid stops them escaping with the steam.

Ingredients

  • 3cm fresh ginger, sliced
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Pinch of ground turmeric (optional)
  • Lemon slices, to serve

Method

  1. Put the sliced ginger in a mug or small teapot.
  2. Pour over the boiling water and steep 8-10 minutes — the longer it sits, the stronger it gets.
  3. Stir in the lemon juice and honey once the tea has cooled slightly.
  4. Add a pinch of turmeric if you like, and serve with lemon slices.
