There's a reason turmeric has been stirred into warm milk for centuries. This golden cup is equal parts comfort and function — earthy turmeric, warming ginger and sweet cinnamon, blended into something that feels like a small ceremony at the end of the day.
One trick makes all the difference: a pinch of black pepper. It sounds odd in a sweet drink, but it helps your body actually absorb the curcumin in turmeric — the compound doing most of the good work. You won't taste it; you'll just get more from every cup.
Make it once the slow way, on the stove, and you'll never reach for a sachet again.
Ingredients
The base
- 2 cups milk of choice (oat or coconut work beautifully)
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- ½ tsp ground ginger (or 1 tsp freshly grated)
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch black pepper — helps you absorb the turmeric
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup, to taste
To finish
- A dusting of extra cinnamon
- 1 tsp coconut oil (optional, for a silkier cup)
Method
- Warm the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
- Whisk in the turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper, keeping it moving so the spices don't clump.
- Let it sit at a gentle simmer for 3–4 minutes, whisking now and then, so the flavours open up.
- Take off the heat and stir in the honey and coconut oil. For a café-style froth, blend for a few seconds or use a milk frother.
- Pour into two mugs, dust with cinnamon, and drink slowly. This one's a ritual, not a rush.
